Chicago Manufacturing Tax Prep, Bookkeeping & Accounting
Cost Accounting, Inventory, the Illinois Machinery Exemption, and R&D Credits, Handled by a Team That Understands How You Actually Make Money
Manufacturing accounting is its own discipline. Between raw materials, work in progress, finished goods, overhead allocation, and knowing your true cost per unit, there is a lot that general accountants get wrong, and a lot of money at stake when they do. Add in Illinois-specific breaks like the manufacturing machinery exemption and the R&D credit, and the difference between a generalist and a firm that knows manufacturing can be tens of thousands of dollars a year.
Heard & Associates LLC provides tax preparation, bookkeeping, and accounting built for Chicago manufacturers. We keep your cost accounting and inventory clean, make sure you are claiming the Illinois sales tax exemptions you are entitled to, capture credits most manufacturers miss, and file your taxes to keep the most in your business. You run the shop. We handle the numbers.

What Our Manufacturing Service Includes
We handle the full financial picture for your manufacturing business:

Do You Know Your True Cost Per Unit?
This is the number that separates manufacturers who grow from those who stay stuck: what does it actually cost to make each product, once you account for materials, direct labor, and your share of overhead? Price off a guess, and you either leave margin on the table or win jobs that quietly lose money.
We set up proper cost accounting so every product carries its real material, labor, and overhead cost. That tells you which products and customers are actually profitable, where your margins are slipping, and how to bid and price with confidence instead of hoping.
Inventory Accounting That Holds Up
Inventory is where manufacturing books get complicated, and where errors quietly distort both your profit picture and your tax bill. Raw materials, work in progress, and finished goods all have to be tracked and valued correctly, and the method you use affects your taxable income.
We keep your inventory properly accounted for and choose the valuation approach that fits your operation. Good news for smaller manufacturers: under current federal rules, businesses under the gross receipts threshold (around 30 million dollars) are exempt from the most complex inventory capitalization requirements, which simplifies your accounting considerably. We make sure you are using the simplest compliant method available to you.
The Illinois Machinery Exemption You May Be Under-Claiming
This is the single most overlooked tax break for Illinois manufacturers, and it is worth real money.
Illinois exempts from sales and use tax machinery and equipment used primarily in manufacturing or assembling products for sale, including repair and replacement parts. That alone is significant on capital-heavy equipment purchases. But since 2019, the exemption was expanded well beyond big machines to include production-related supplies and consumables, things like fuels, coolants, solvents, oils, lubricants, adhesives, hand tools, protective apparel, and safety equipment used in your manufacturing process, plus property used in R&D, quality control, inventory handling, and packaging.
Many manufacturers do not realize how far this reaches, and pay sales tax on purchases that should have been exempt. If you have been overpaying, you may be able to claim a refund for past purchases within the allowed time window, not just save going forward. We review your purchasing, make sure the exemption is applied correctly on Form ST-587, and pursue refunds where you overpaid.

The R&D Tax Credit Isn’t Just for Labs
When manufacturers hear “R&D tax credit,” they assume it is for pharmaceutical companies and tech firms. It is not. If your shop develops new products, improves a manufacturing process, designs custom tooling, builds prototypes, or works to make production faster or more efficient, that work may qualify for federal and Illinois research and development credits.
This is one of the most valuable and most missed credits in manufacturing. It can offset income tax, and for qualifying small businesses, it can even offset payroll taxes. The requirements are specific and the documentation matters, which is exactly why most manufacturers never claim it.
We evaluate whether your activities qualify, help you document them properly, and claim the credit at both the federal and Illinois level. For an active manufacturer, this can be a meaningful annual benefit.
Make Your Equipment Purchases Work at Tax Time
Manufacturing is capital-intensive, and how you handle equipment purchases has a major tax impact. A new machine, production line, or major upgrade can often be expensed immediately through Section 179 or bonus depreciation rather than depreciated slowly over many years, but the timing should be planned around your income, not left to chance.
We coordinate your capital purchases with your overall tax picture and plan year-end around your production and cash flow, so big investments deliver the biggest tax benefit in the right year.
Are You Set Up to Keep the Most of What You Earn?
As your manufacturing business grows, your entity structure affects your tax bill. Many shop owners operate in a structure that has them paying more self-employment tax than they need to. Once your profit is high enough, electing S-Corp status can reduce that meaningfully.
We run your actual numbers, tell you whether it makes sense, and handle the setup if it does. If you are formalizing or restructuring the business, we help you get the entity right.
