Content Creator & Influencer Tax Prep, Bookkeeping & Accounting
Brand Deals, Ad Revenue, Gifted Products, and Quarterly Taxes, Handled, So a Big Year Doesn’t Become a Tax Nightmare
The creator economy pays in ways the tax code never planned for: brand deals from one company, ad revenue from another, affiliate links, subscriptions, gifted products, and appearance fees, all landing in different accounts, often with no taxes withheld. Most accountants have no idea how to handle it, which means missed deductions, surprise tax bills, and creators paying far more than they should.
Heard & Associates LLC provides tax preparation, bookkeeping, and accounting built for Chicago content creators, influencers, and models. We organize your income across every platform, capture the deductions specific to creator work, handle the gifted-product and quarterly-tax rules that trip people up, and keep the IRS off your back. You create. We handle the numbers.

What Our Creator Service Includes
We handle the full financial side of your creator business:

No 1099? You Still Owe the Tax
Here is the trap that catches creators every year. The rules for when platforms send you a 1099 recently changed, for 2026, a payment platform only issues a 1099-K if you cross both 20,000 dollars and 200 transactions, and brand payments generally trigger a 1099-NEC only above 2,000 dollars.
Many creators see those thresholds and assume that if no form shows up, there is no tax. That is wrong, and it is expensive. All of your creator income is taxable whether or not you receive a 1099, from a single 500-dollar brand deal to ad revenue that never generates a form. The IRS expects it reported regardless.
We make sure every stream is accounted for, so you report correctly and are never caught out by income a platform did not formally report.
Those “Free” Products Are Taxable Income
This is the single most misunderstood part of creator taxes. When a brand sends you free products, a gifted trip, or a PR package in exchange for posts or coverage, that is generally not a gift in the eyes of the IRS. It is compensation, and its fair market value is taxable income.
Creators who receive thousands of dollars in products over a year and never account for them can face a real tax surprise, and a real problem in an audit. We help you track gifted products correctly, understand what counts as taxable, and plan for it, so a closet full of “free” gifts does not become an unexpected tax bill.
The Deductions Creators Miss
The flip side of creator income is that a lot of what you spend to make content is deductible, but only if it is tracked and documented. We make sure you claim what you are entitled to, including:
- Cameras, lighting, computers, and production gear
- Editing software, apps, and platform subscriptions
- Home studio or dedicated content space
- Phone and internet, business-use portion
- Props, set materials, and shoot supplies
- Travel to shoots, events, and collaborations
- Editors, photographers, and assistants you pay
- Agency, management, and platform fees
One area to be careful with: everyday clothing is generally not deductible, even if you bought it for content, because the IRS only allows it when it is not suitable for regular wear. We help you apply these rules correctly so your deductions hold up.

Hobby or Business? It Matters for Your Deductions
The IRS looks closely at whether creator work is a real business or a hobby, especially in the early years when you may be spending more than you earn. If it is deemed a hobby, your ability to deduct losses is sharply limited.
Operating like a business, keeping proper books, having a profit motive, and treating it professionally, is what establishes it as legitimate. We help you keep the records and structure that support business status, so your deductions and losses hold up.
Brand Deals From Everywhere: Multistate & Beyond
Creator income often comes from companies and platforms all over the country, and sometimes the world. That can raise questions about where income is taxed and whether you have filing obligations beyond Illinois, particularly as your brand partnerships grow.
We help you navigate multistate income, foreign platform payments, and the reporting that comes with them, so a national or international audience does not turn into a tax mess.
Earning Well? You Might Be Overpaying
As your creator income grows, your business structure starts to matter a lot. Many creators operate as sole proprietors and pay self-employment tax on every dollar. Once your income is high enough, electing S-Corp status can reduce that meaningfully.
We run your actual numbers, tell you honestly whether you are at the point where it pays off, and handle the setup and payroll if it does. If you are just formalizing your creator business, we help you form the right entity from the start.t suitable for regular wear. We help you apply these rules correctly so your deductions hold up.
