What is an amended tax return (Form 1040-X)?
An amended tax return allows taxpayers to correct information on a previously filed federal return. Form 1040-X is used to fix errors related to income, deductions, credits, filing status, or dependents. If the change affects your Illinois return, a separate Form IL-1040-X is filed with the Illinois Department of Revenue.
Filing an amendment properly is critical. Mistakes can delay refunds, trigger IRS notices, or create compliance issues. Heard & Associates LLC handles the entire amendment process for Chicago taxpayers, from reviewing the original return to tracking the result.
Not sure whether an amendment is required? We review your original individual return and provide clear guidance before moving forward. If the return was never filed at all, our unfiled tax return service is the right starting point.

When can you amend a tax return?
To claim a refund, Form 1040-X generally must be filed within three years of the date you filed the original return, or within two years of the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. Returns filed early count as filed on the due date. If you owe more, filing and paying sooner limits the interest and penalties that run from the original due date.
Illinois has its own clock. When a federal amendment increases your Illinois tax, Form IL-1040-X is due within 120 days of the federal change being finalized. When the change lowers your tax, you have two years plus 120 days to claim the Illinois refund. We track both deadlines so nothing is forfeited.
How to file an amended Illinois tax return
Illinois does not accept a second IL-1040 with new numbers. Changes to a filed Illinois return go on Form IL-1040-X, one form per tax year, with the supporting documents attached. Here is what Illinois expects to see with it:
- A copy of your original IL-1040 and the federal Form 1040-X
- Proof the federal change was finalized, such as the IRS notice or refund
- Corrected W-2s, 1099s or K-1s that caused the change
- Any schedules that changed, even if the totals look the same
- A copy of the check if you paid additional federal tax
- IRS examination reports if the IRS made the change
The Illinois amended return process
- Finish the federal Form 1040-X first, since Illinois starts from your federal figures.
- Wait for the IRS to accept a refund claim before filing in Illinois, because the state measures its deadline from that notice.
- Complete Form IL-1040-X with the corrected income, credits and tax.
- Attach the federal 1040-X, proof of finalization and changed schedules.
- File and pay any balance due within 120 days to avoid state penalties.
We handle every step and keep copies of everything filed, so an Illinois notice months later is easy to answer.
Amend my Illinois return →Common mistakes on Illinois amended tax returns
These are the errors we see most often on amended returns prepared without professional help.
Illinois treats a second original return as a duplicate, not a correction. The change is ignored and the refund never arrives.
For refund claims, the state wants the IRS acceptance notice attached. Filing early means a request for more information and a longer wait.
An IL-1040-X without the federal 1040-X and proof of the change is incomplete. Illinois will not process it until the paperwork arrives.
When a federal change raises your Illinois tax, waiting past 120 days adds state penalties and interest to the amount you already owe.
A federal fix that changes income or credits almost always changes Illinois tax too. Correcting one and not the other invites a notice.
The IRS and Illinois correct simple math errors themselves. Filing an amendment for one adds processing time without changing the result.
When you do not need to file an amended return
Not every mistake needs a 1040-X. Here is how to tell the difference.

Amended tax return questions
Every correction is different. If your question is not here, ask us during a consultation.
Book a consultation →How do I file an amended Illinois tax return?
File Form IL-1040-X for the year you need to change, one form per year. Attach your federal Form 1040-X, proof that the IRS finalized the change and any schedules that changed. Illinois does not accept a second IL-1040 with corrected numbers. We prepare and file it for you and keep copies of every attachment.
When can I amend my Illinois tax return?
You can amend as soon as you discover the error, but if your federal return also changed, wait until the IRS finalizes it. For a federal change that increases your Illinois tax, IL-1040-X is due within 120 days. For a refund, you have two years plus 120 days from the federal finalization, or generally three years from the original filing for state-only changes.
What is the difference between Form 1040-X and IL-1040-X?
Form 1040-X corrects your federal return with the IRS. Form IL-1040-X corrects your Illinois return with the Illinois Department of Revenue. Most changes affect both, so they are usually filed together, with the federal amendment finished first because Illinois starts from your federal figures.
How long do I have to amend a federal tax return?
To claim a refund, generally three years from the date you filed the original return or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. If you owe additional tax there is no deadline, but interest and penalties keep growing until it is paid.
Can an amended return be filed electronically?
Yes, for the current year and the two prior tax years, as long as the original was e-filed. The IRS accepts up to three e-filed amendments per tax year. Older returns, and returns originally filed on paper during the current year, must be amended on paper and mailed.
How long does an amended return take to process?
The IRS says to allow 8 to 12 weeks, and some take up to 16 weeks. You can check progress with the Where’s My Amended Return tool about three weeks after filing. Illinois processes IL-1040-X separately, and attaching complete documentation is the best way to avoid a request for more information.
Will amending my return trigger an audit?
An amended return does not automatically trigger an audit. It is reviewed like any other return. Correcting a known error is far safer than leaving it, because the IRS generally has three years to examine a return and penalties run from the original due date.
What if I owe more tax after amending?
Pay as much as you can when you file. Interest and failure-to-pay penalties accrue from the original due date, so earlier is cheaper. If the balance is more than you can handle at once, our IRS representation team can set up a payment plan.
How many times can you amend a tax return?
There is no legal limit, but each amendment must correct a real change. The IRS accepts up to three e-filed amendments per tax year, and any beyond that go on paper. Illinois requires a separate IL-1040-X for each change as well.
Can you amend a business tax return?
Yes. S corporations, partnerships and C corporations file amended returns on their own forms, and corrected K-1s go to each owner. Because owner returns change too, we handle the business amendment and each personal amendment together.
